“...thrilling, poignant, unexpected, and utterly D.I.Y.” - The New Yorker
“A unique immersive performance of Steve Reich’s 20th century minimal masterpiece of the same name, Different Trains includes electronics, a string quartet led by Brendan Speltz and accompanied by stunning cirque-style choreography.
Reich wrote Different Trains while contemplating his childhood train trips in the 1940’s between New York and Los Angeles. As a Jewish man, it occurred to him that similar train trips in Europe during that time had a very different and haunting implication. In three movements, Different Trains strikes an emotional connection through its narrative, whilst live music forms a dramatic soundscape that transports you to a time of instability and doubt. This show is darkly nostalgic, profoundly devastating, gut wrenching and ultimately hopeful.
Within today's precarious socio-political environment, this piece offers deeply personal and urgent lessons from the past.”
